We have parental consent for some children’s images, do they still need anonymising?

Our advice, supported by the UK Online Harms Early Warning Working Group guidance, is to anonymise all children’s faces regardless of consent status. Consent does not eliminate the safeguarding risk , any identifiable image of a child on a public website can be scraped and manipulated by digital tools regardless of whether a parent has consented to its use.

Anonymising all children consistently also removes the need to match consent records to individual photos, making the process significantly faster, simpler and more robust, and removes an administrative burden from your team.

Why choose a managed service over a DIY tool?

There are self-service tools available that allow schools to log in, upload images, review each result and download them individually. For some schools that works well. But for many Headteachers and Business Managers, adding another system to learn is the last thing they need.
